Setting the Scene at Flaming Gorge Reservoir
Flaming Gorge Reservoir is a massive body of water that stretches across two states and offers stunning views. It's known for its big Kokanee salmon and record-breaking lake trout, making it a hotspot for anglers looking for a challenge.
Targeting Kokanee Salmon
Kokanee salmon are the prime target. Unlike their sea-going counterparts, these salmon thrive in freshwater habitats. Habits and Lim are the epitome of expertise when it comes to locating these elusive creatures. Armed with advanced tools, they decipher the water temperature and depth zones that Kokanee favor, with their comfort zone typically hovering around 52 degrees Fahrenheit.
Our anglers use special gear to catch Kokanee. They rely on a mix of dodger and squid bait setups. The dodgers are flashy plates with paint that attracts fish. Combined with squid baits, they make an irresistible combo for Kokanee.
Our anglers explain how Lake Trout pups are managed to keep the ecosystem healthy. By limiting the number of smaller fish, the bigger ones have room to grow, which helps the Kokanee population.
